Flatweave and jute: choosing a rug for your space

Choosing a rug starts with imagining how you want to use a room: a place to talk, read or walk barefoot. Then come the practical questions. What is it made from? How is it constructed? What size does the room need, and how should the rug be cared for?

Flatweave and jute describe different things

Flatweave describes a rug’s construction. Jute is a fibre. They are not opposing categories: comparing two pieces requires information about both material and technique. An informed choice combines those details with specific dimensions and care instructions.

A name alone cannot establish softness, water resistance or washability. Cotton rugs do not all share the same composition either: some are blends.

Two references from our Peru collection

The IC12446 Grey/Black is described as handwoven on a manual loom, made from a cotton blend, in a rectangular 198 × 290 cm format. Its description does not specify the blend percentages. This is a large-format reference: measure the space before imagining it beneath your sofa or table.

The IC15250 Natural is 100% jute, with a braided construction and a diameter of 90 cm. Its scale and shape differ from the IC12446; the two pieces do not replace the same rug size. It may work as an accent in a corner, provided the layout and intended use are suitable.

Start with the layout

Mark the shape of the piece you are considering on the floor. Check door clearance, routes between furniture and the position of furniture legs. In a dining room, include chair movement. In a living room, decide whether the rug will define the whole conversation area or accompany a particular item of furniture.

Grey and black can create contrast beside lighter furniture; natural jute offers a starting point for a wood-and-neutral palette. These are styling ideas rather than rules: compare the photographs with the colours and light in your home.

Choose a care routine you can maintain

  • IC12446: low-power vacuuming, local treatment of marks without vigorous rubbing, and professional deep cleaning according to its description and label.
  • IC15250: vacuuming with a flat nozzle, spot cleaning with a dry or slightly damp cloth, and avoiding excess water. The product description states that it should not be machine washed.

These instructions apply to the references cited. Do not use them for another piece without checking its composition, finishes and label.

A short checklist before choosing

  • Confirm material and technique separately.
  • Check dimensions and the available variant.
  • View a full photograph and a detail image.
  • Consider whether the care routine suits your home.
  • Ask about any missing information.
